Nicole Campbell began her training at Robert Lee School of Dance in Garden City, Michigan. Through high school she supplemented her time as a competitive dancer as a four-year dance major in the Creative and Performing Arts program at Churchill High School. Nicole has extended her professional training through Complexions Contemporary Ballet, University of Michigan MPulse, Broadway Dance Center, Millennium Dance Complex, Atlanta Ballet, Gotta Dance Atlanta and Dance 411.

Since graduating high school, Nicole has kept busy on the metro Detroit dance scene. Nicole has worked for local dance competition Dance Force Express and interned for Troy-based modern company Kristi Faulkner Dance. She has served on faculty at five different studios, teaching virtually all styles and levels-including dancers with Special Needs. Nicole also spent the 2014-2015 dance season as the competitive company director for Jeannie Zimbalatti’s School of Dance and Dancing Feats Dance Centre. Nicole has also completed two choreographic residencies with the CAPA dance department at Churchill High School, the most recent of which was a featured presentation in the 12th Detroit Dance Race at artLabJ.

Nicole is also a member of Detroit-based contemporary company JTdance and street jazz/ voguing/waacking crew Melodic Nocturne Dance Tribe. She has performed throughout New York, Chicago, New Jersey, Ohio and all over the state of Michigan. Additional performance credits include Hannibal Buress, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, United Way and halftime shows for both the Detroit Lions and Detroit Pistons.

Nicole received her Bachelor’s of Science in Dance Performance from Wayne State University in May 2015. She will be relocating to Atlanta in September 2015 to further pursue her performance career.

I grew up in Garden City, MI and I trained at Pointe Counterpointe Dance Center for 15 years. I began dancing competitively at the age of 5 and competed my first solo at the age of 6. During this time I also pursued many local performance opportunities.  I was a member of the Detroit Pistons Jr. Automotion Dance Team in 2004 and I was also selected to perform as a back-up dancer with Jesse McCartney for the Detroit Lions Half Time Show in 2008.

I was crowned Teen Miss Dance of Michigan in 2008 and placed 4th runner up to the title of Teen Miss Dance of America 2009. I was later crowned Miss Dance of Michigan 2011. One of my proudest memories was becoming the first student in Dance Masters Chapter 4 history to win the highest score each of the four audition classes (Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Acro) as well as the highest overall interview score. I then placed 1st runner up to the title of Miss Dance of America 2012.

During college, I was a member of the Michigan State Dance Team for the 2011-2012 season. I also auditioned for Season 9 of So You Think You Can Dance and was awarded a ticket to Las Vegas. In August of 2012, I began teaching at Elite Dance Company in East Lansing, MI. I worked as an instructor and choreographer for the competitive team at Elite for three years.

I recently graduated from Michigan State University with my first two degrees, including a BS in Athletic Training and a BS in Exercise Physiology. I also completed the requirements to become a certified athletic trainer and earned the credentials of ATC. I will be moving to State College, PA this fall to work as a graduate assistant athletic trainer with the Penn State University dance, cheerleading and gymnastics teams. I plan to do my Master’s thesis research on examining functional tests to determine when young dancers are ready to begin training en pointe. I will graduate with an MS in Kinesiology from Penn State in 2017.

In the future, I plan to integrate my knowledge of dance and sports medicine and work as an athletic trainer in the performing arts. Potential career opportunities I would like to pursue include working for a professional ballet company, Cirque du Soleil, or the Radio City Rockettes. One day, I would like to open a sports performance and training facility specifically for dancers, gymnasts and other artistic athletes.
